HOW TO: Clean Your Makeup Brushes 101
To put it simply, cleaning your makeup brushes: sucks. It sucks a-lot. Unfortunately, it’s a necessary evil in this industry.
We’ve all used a foundation brush in the past and thought, “there’s no way I’ll ever get this thing clean.” Well, I’m here to tell you that I’ve found the solution!
Have you ever done a beautiful makeup look and tried to recreate it the next day only to have it look like absolute garbage? Well, you can probably thank your dirty brushes for that one.
Listen, I’m not going to lie to you, I clean my own, personal, makeup brushes maybe once a month. Ideally I’d do it once a week, but your girl is kinda lazy. My professional brushes however (the ones that I use on set) those get deep cleaned every night after work. On set, they’re cleaned in between each new face they touch. That’s just basic hygiene. Does it absolutely suck coming home after a 12-18 hour day and have to clean sometimes 50+ brushes? Yes, yes it does; but that’s part of the job.
It’s taken me nearly an entire year to finally come up with a system that actually works (for me) and is easy and efficient (and most importantly, won’t break your bank).
These tips and tricks can be used on any and all makeup brushes: professional or personal. Powders or liquids.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Microfiber towel(s)
Zote Laundry Soap
Your Brushes (dirty)
A dish washing glove (preferably one with grooves on it)
Cinema Secrets Brush Cleanser
Step 1: Take out your dirty brushes and put on a dish glove (or 2, up to you)
Step 2: Lay out a CLEAN towel on the counter, next to the sink
Step 3: Make sure the water is warm, not burning hot but not cold either
Step 4: Place your bar of Zote Laundry soap inside the sink
Step 5: One at a time, wet your brush under the running water, rub it on the soap then, using your gloved hand, rinse out the brush under the running water
Step 6: Once the brush is clean, lay it down on the CLEAN towel. Leave your brushes to dry overnight. (If they’re still damp in the morning, using another clean microfiber towel, gently finish drying them)
Step 7 optional: I use Cinema Secrets Brush Cleanser on set. Simply spray a paper towel with the cleanser and clean the brush. It’s quick & easy, not to mention quick drying. Added Bonus: It smells AMAZING!
I hope these tips work for you! If you have another way that works, please leave a comment below! I’d love to hear from you!
Until next time,
Samantha
